Indiana suicide prevention plans and initiatives
The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA) coordinates the statewide suicide prevention program and leads the development of a state suicide prevention plan (§12-21-5-5). In 2023, Indiana enacted SB 1 and tasked DMHA with overseeing the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, required Medicaid reimbursement for eligible certified community behavioral health clinic (CCBHC) services, and reestablished the Indiana Behavioral Health Commission to report on the progress and implementation of 988 and CCBHC services, among other responsibilities (S.E.A. 1, P.L. 162).
The Indiana Suicide Prevention Network (ISPN) serves as Indiana's statewide suicide prevention coalition. AFSP-Indiana is a Board member and participates in ISPN activities.
The Indiana Suicide Prevention Plan: July 1, 2021–June 30, 2023 was released in June 2021. Throughout 2025, DMHA, AFSP-Indiana, and over 50 other state and local partners began developing the 2026-2030 Indiana Suicide Prevention Plan which is scheduled to be released Spring 2026. Strategic priority areas include community-based suicide prevention, health and behavioral health, crisis services, postvention, data and evaluation, and infrastructure.
Indiana suicide data is available through the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH). Annually, IDOH releases a Suicide and Overdose Fatality Report required by IC 16-37-5. In 2025, IDOH released a dashboard with publicly available information on suicide fatalities.
