Nebraska suicide prevention plans and initiatives
The Nebraska State Suicide Prevention Coalition (NSSPC) is a voluntary group made up of public and private agencies, survivors of suicide loss, and other interested stakeholders to prevent suicide and support those affected by it. AFSP-Nebraska serves as a member of the NSSPC Executive Board. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NDHHS) recognizes NSSPC as the primary group responsible for coordinating state suicide prevention efforts. The NSSPC provides suicide prevention information and resources to organizations and families and supplies means restriction materials to emergency rooms for distribution to support networks. NSSPC also promotes the suicide prevention efforts of other groups, including Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors (LOSS) Teams and AFSP-Nebraska. Each year, NSSPC offers Mini-Grants to local suicide prevention coalitions, LOSS teams, schools, communities, and non-profit organizations.
In 2025, LB414 established the Suicide Mortality Review Team, of which AFSP-Nebraska is a member, within the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. The Review Team shall develop a suicide mortalities data collection system in a cooperative agreement with the Nebraska Violent Death Reporting System (NEVDRS); conduct an annual analysis; develop protocols for suicide investigations; study the adequacies of statutes, ordinances, rules, training, and services; and educate the public regarding the incidences and causes of suicide and the public’s role in preventing these deaths.
NSSPC, NDHHS, and the Kim Foundation collaborate to publish a state plan to help Nebraskans work together to prevent suicide. The most recent report, Nebraska Statewide Suicide Prevention Plan 2022-2025, provides a framework for state agencies, regional entities, community coalitions, and organizations to guide development of action plans related to suicide prevention.
